Poppy All Grown Up

Coming off my last dog shoot where I experimented with f/8.0 in harsh sunlight, I decided to get out my nifty fifty again for this shoot, this time shooting wide open at f/1.8 the entire time so that I could achieve that bokeh look that I was missing from my previous set of f/8.0 photos.

Because Lee’s yard is shaded by a huge magnolia tree, f/1.8 1/500 is not enough on it’s own to expose for the shade, so I used some different ISO’s for this shoot to see just how bad the noise would get.

In hindsight, I know now that it is very hard to get all of a dog’s head in focus at just f/1.8 as these photos demonstrate. Additionally, my Canon 90D’s autofocus tends to grab onto the dog’s nose and not their eyes which was my biggest takeaway from this shoot

For comparison, the last four photos were all taken at f/7.1.
